What the drill teaches

Which extinguisher, and when

Two questions before you go in. Paper in a bin is one answer. A live server rack is a different one, and water is never it.

How to read a fire plan

Where you are, your two ways out, where the extinguisher and pull station sit, and the muster point outside.

What the tag on the unit means

Annual date, monthly checks, six year service, hydro test, and the class rating that says whether it is safe on electrical.

Pull, aim, squeeze, sweep

Aim at the base, not the flames. Sweep across the whole width. Stop sweeping and the fire comes back.

Pull

The pin breaks the tamper seal and frees the handle.

Aim

At the base of the fire, about two metres back.

Squeeze

A five pound unit gives you about fourteen seconds.

Sweep

Side to side across the base until it is out.

Posted near the main entrance or the alarm panel.
Walk to your muster station
Once, so your feet know the way.
Find the extinguisher nearest your desk
Then check its tag. Past its annual date, tell whoever runs the building.
